How to care for metal pieces so they last for generations

Metal is a durable material. But even it needs occasional attention. The good news — caring for forged pieces is simpler than you might expect.

Powder coat (polyester)

The most common surface treatment for exterior pieces. Wipe with a damp cloth once a month — clean water is enough, no aggressive cleaning products. Once a year, apply a thin layer of car wax or a specialist protective product. If the coating is damaged anywhere, repair it immediately with a specialist touch-up paint — corrosion progresses quickly where metal is exposed.

Patinated surface

Intentional oxidation, wax, natural appearance. Apply fish oil, beeswax or a specialist metal wax once a year. Do not sand the patina away — it is part of the character of the piece.

Stainless steel

Wipe in the direction of the brushing, not in circles. Do not use steel wire pads or chlorine-based cleaning products. Once a year, treat with a specialist stainless steel cleaner and protective oil.

Forged knives and tools

Wipe dry after every use. Occasionally apply a thin layer of food-safe oil (such as camellia or linseed). Store in a dry place. Treat the wooden handle with natural oil once a season.

Exterior structures

Check gates, fences and railings once a year — especially at joints and close to the ground where moisture accumulates. Repair any coating damage immediately.
